Robots in 2023
Feb. 16, 2023 - The stock of operational robots around the
globe hit a new record of about 3.5 million units–the value of installations
reached an estimated 15.7 billion USD. The International Federation of Robotics
analyzes the top 5 trends shaping robotics and automation in 2023.
1. Energy efficiency
Energy efficiency is key to improving companies'
competitiveness. The use of robotics can help in many ways to reduce energy
consumption in production. Robots work at high speeds, which increase
production rates, making production more time- and energy-efficient. This
reduces operating costs. Robot control is able to convert kinetic energy into
electricity. Another feature is the smart energy saving mode that controls the
robot's energy supply on demand throughout the working day.
2. Reorganization
This is very important for car manufacturing companies. These
manufacturers are using robotic automation to cost-effectively and in large
quantities produce powerful batteries to support their electric vehicle
projects. Another recovery trend is the relocation of microchip manufacturing
back to the US and Europe. Specially designed robots automate the production of
silicon wafers, undertake cleaning and sanitizing tasks or inspect integrated
circuits.
3. Easy to use robots
Robot programming has become easier and more accessible to
non-experts. Software-based automation platform providers support companies,
allowing users to manage industrial robots without prior programming
experience. Software startups are entering this market with solutions specific
to the needs of small and medium-sized companies. Many new consumers responded
to the pandemic in 2020 by experimenting with robotics solutions.
4. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Automation
Advances in digital technology enable robotics suppliers and
system integrators to offer new applications and improve existing ones in terms
of speed and quality. Connected robots are transforming manufacturing. Robots
will increasingly work as part of a connected digital ecosystem: Cloud
Computing, Big Data Analytics or 5G mobile phone networks provide the technical
basis for optimal performance. Artificial intelligence (AI) holds great
potential for robotics.
5. Second life for industrial robots
Since an industrial robot has a service life of up to thirty
years, new technological equipment is a good opportunity to give old robots a
"second life". This repair-ready strategy also saves costs and
resources for robot manufacturers and their customers. (IFR, 2023)
Robotics and Organizational Structure
Despite already having a well-established Business Process
Management (BPM) practice, some organizations establish entire reporting units
dedicated to Robotic Process automation (RPA). In discussions with technology
leaders, some find it difficult to articulate how RPA fits into the overall
process. RPA as a feature that works when BPM or server-side technology cannot
automate the use case.
Role of Robotic Process Automation’s in the
organization
Automate the reading or writing of data from a required
system or form Robotics can support further automation of a business process. Most
organizations that remain viable in the long term will need some form of RPA
solution as an alternative to, or in conjunction with, Extract Transforms Load
or Service Oriented Architecture to operational performance. RPA and BPM should
be viewed as complementary rather than competing technologies.
Once RPA is implemented, it is important for the organization
to establish strong operational oversight. Or, if any internal or external
aspect of a business process changes, RPA will fail to function correctly.
Governance and monitoring are key to the long-term success of implementation.
Robotic process automation efforts within an organization, process change, and
resource turnover are essentially strategies to achieve an outcome, namely,
accuracy, efficiency, and cost reduction, respectively. A company's help desk
and call center operations can easily assist in providing higher productivity
and lower handling time. (Teti, 2021)
Impact of robotics on workers and organization
It is a misconception among a large number of employees that
robots and automation will destroy jobs. Automation isn't just eliminating
jobs; It transforms and creates new types of jobs. Automation and robotics generally
eliminate repetitive tasks and free people to do more complex work that only
humans can do. A company's HR department plays a major role in this process.
Strategies should be found for that. Employees need to be made aware of the
true impact of automation, or they will panic and can have bad effects.

As a trick, employees can name each bot and become the bot's guardians. They can create feelings that robots are actually here to assist them - and not the other way around. Building rapport with it helps remove walls of resistance (Chandrasekaran, 2022)
